The forest floor at one metre. And which morning to go.

One hillside holds damp under a north-facing canopy. The one across the valley does not. Sweden’s national laser scan tells them apart at one metre, and ten days of weather name the morning to go.

The forest floor, read at one metre.

Every forest in the country, at metre grain, with its own surface for each species — chanterelle wants different ground from lingonberry. The best ground glows gold.

The same forest as the weather sees it: one flat, uniform value across the whole scene. The same forest resampled to a 30-metre grid: the fine threads have thickened into blocks. The same forest with terrain derived at one metre: fine gold threads trace damp north-facing ground along the ravine.

Söderåsen, straight from the production data — aspect, wetness and canopy, scored for chanterelle, Cantharellus cibarius.

Sweden’s national laser scan

Slope, aspect and wetness worked out from Lantmäteriet’s one-metre LiDAR. The gold threads are damp north-facing ground under canopy — the shape a flush follows, and the ground you walk to.
